What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence is the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks which normally requires human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision making and translation between languages. AI covers domains such as machine learning, deep learning, neural networks, natural language processing, knowledge based, experts systems. computer vision, and image processing.

Put simply. AI technologies mimic humans’ ability to Sense, Think and Act (Forrester).

AI Started off as a hypothetical situation, in today’s world it’s the most important technology full of potential. AI is rapidly growing as a field of study and also as an economy.

In the recent past Artificial Intelligence have been able to accomplish this by creating machines and robots that have been used in various fields including healthcare, robotics, marketing, finance, business analytics, and many more.

According to Gartner, 40 percent of major businesses will implement AI solutions in 2020, and more than half will double existing implementations in 2020. This forecast was made before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, but even with this taken into account the rise of AI will be exponential.

Artificial Intelligence Milestones & History

700BC - Talos

The concept of Artificial Intelligence goes back to the classical ages. Under Greek methodology the concept of machines robots were well thought off. Talos, was a giant animated bronze warrior programmed to guard the island of Crete created by Hephaestus. No one knows if those ideas where actually implemented but they were present in the scripts.

1950 - Introduction of Artificial Intelligence.

Alan Turing published a landmark paper in which he speculated about the possibility of creating machines that think. Alan created what is known as the Turing test – this test is used to determine whether or not a computer can think intelligently like a human being. Alan noted that thinking is difficult to define. In short, he argued that if you can’t distinguish between a conversation initiated by a machine or human being than its reasonable to say that the machine is thinking. Meaning that the machine will pass the Turing test. To date we haven’t found a machine that fully cleared the Turing test. The Turing test was the first serious proposal in the philosophy of artificial intelligence.

1951 - Game AI.

A computer scientist known as Christopher Strachey wrote a checkers program and at the same time a program was written for chess as well by Dietrich Prinz. These programs were later improved and rewritten, but this was the first attempt to create a program that could play chess or can compete with humans.

1956 - The Invention of AI.

The first the term Artificial Intelligence was coined by Johan Mcarthy at the Dartmouth conference.

1959 - The First AI Laboratory.

The first AI lab was established at MIT this period marked the research era for AI.

1960 - The First Robot.

General Motors introduced the first robot to its assembly line.

1961 - The First Chatbot.

Introduction of the first chatbox– Eliza.

1997 - Deep Blue Wins in Chess.

IBM introduced Deep Blue which won the world champion Garry Kasparov in the game of chess, this was the first accomplishment by AI.

2005 - Robotic Car Stanely.

Stanford team autonomous robotic car Stanely wins the the 2005 DARPA Grand challenge.

2011 - Watson Wins Jeopardy.

IBM’s question answering system – Watson – defeated the 2 greatest Jeopardy champions Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings.

Artificial Narrow Intelligence

Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) also known as weak AI involves applying AI only to specific tasks.

So many companies that claim to use artificial intelligence are actually operating as weak AI focused on a narrowly defined specific problem

Example is Alexa is ANI it operates within unlimited pre-defined range of functions there is no genuine intelligence or there is no self-awareness despite being a sophisticated example of weak AI

The google search engine Sophia the humanoid, self-driving cars, and even AlphaGo fall under the category of Weak AI.
